Classic Lenten Movies: The Passion of the Christ

Most people, especially in the Christian country of the Philippines, have already heard about the crucifixion and the suffering of Jesus on the cross to save man from sure damnation. All must have seen the numerous replicas of Jesus on the cross in Churches and elsewhere. The cross must be the most popular symbol, yet, do you know what it means?

Here’s the Christian movie that will show you the answer. It elicited more controversy than any Christian-inspired movie in modern time. It’s The Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson.

The Passion of the Christ relates the story of Jesus and His Crucifixion. Much depicted in this movie is the suffering he went through during that time. A lot of effort has been put in this movie such as getting actors who speak Latin/Aramaic, intensive costume and make-up and not to forget actually being nailed and whipped.

The movie focused more on the suffering of Christ – how He suffered for the sins of the people. It is meant to make the audience realize how Jesus – a God – went through the suffering just to make way to salvation of humankind.

The combination of the story and movie production came so strong and effective in drawing emotions from the audience. It could be the most effective Christian film in modern time. On the first day of the movie’s release, a 56-year old from Kansas collapsed and died later while watching the crucifixion movie. Cries and wails could be heard all over the cinemas running this movie.

Indeed, The Passion of the Christ brought the “suffering of Jesus” into a whole new level of meaning to its audience.

Movie Trivia:

  • James Caviezel who played Jesus got accidentally whipped twice in the making of movie. He also got hit by lightning during the crucifixion scene along with the assistant director, Jan Michelini who got hit twice. Meanwhile, it was Mel Gibson’s hand that was nailed to the cross in the movie.
  • “lack of interest” was the reason why the movie was never popularly released in Israel.

Classic Lenten Movies: The Ten Commandments

The Season of Lent in the Philippines has been a bit boring for me when I was a kid. No shows on TV, we had no video games and other fun stuff and we didn’t go out to swimming resorts and beaches – basically because it gets too crowded and stressful instead of relaxing.

We were just at home, watching what’s on TV (No DVD’s at that time; 90’s). Every year is the same: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. The 2-hour and 30 minutes movie played on the tube. As if the family hasn’t memorized it yet – from TV, Church and Sunday school (and school).

It’s the Ten Commandments by Cecil B. DeMille shown in 1923.

It’s a true classic. It’s long but it’s also worth the watch. There may be more modern commandment-movies but DeMille’s film is still captivating. Just keep in mind that this was produced way back in 1923 so detach yourself from thoughts of modern graphics and special effects.

Movie Trivia:

  • The chariot crashes in the prologue and in other parts of the movie were spontaneous and not choreographed. Because of this, many bit players were injured. No serious injury, though. They went back to work immediately after being treated.

It’s 2010. Do you still remember the 10 Commandments?

  1. "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.”; “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.”
  2. "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.”
  3. "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God.”
  4. “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
  5. “You shall not murder.”
  6. “You shall not commit adultery.”
  7. “You shall not steal.”
  8. “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”
  9. “You shall not covet your neighbor's house.”
  10. “You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

** To COVET means to “to want to have something very much, especially something which belongs to someone else” (dictionary.cambridge.org) It’s similar to ENVY.

Loren Legarda: She’s a bitch!

I couldn’t be more amused with the vice presidential debate hosted by ABS-CBN Harapan at the La Consolacion College aired last Sunday, March 28, 2010.

Only Edu Manzano was a no-show. He said in other interviews that he thinks it’s more important to personally reach those in far regions who couldn’t watch TV shows. In my opinion, there are more people who can watch TV shows kahit sa kapitbahay lang than otherwise.

Anyway, moving on.

First, there were Jejomar Binay and Bayani Fernando. They’re sort of funny effortlessly. I don’t mean that in a bad way, they’re just plain funny – the way they look and talk.

Then there’s our bitch: Loren Legarda. Oh yes, Loren… Loren who couldn’t stop but just insert a comment on how evil Mar Roxas is. She couldn’t help but comment on how Mar isn’t doing his job – she says Mar blocked the free drugs law but Mar countered that the law they passed halved Loren’s own medicine, dati P100 ngayon P50 na lang.

Loren couldn’t help but throw her questions and just throw Mar off track – but he didn’t waver: Oras ko po ito, wag niyong kunin. Harhar!

Aaahh… is it just Loren or is it a Filipino-thing to bring somebody else down to raise oneself? It’s far too obvious in the debate that she has this deep, seething hatred towards Mar. She looked like she’s throwing daggers with her eyes or lashing whip with her tongue. She couldn’t help say how incompetent Mar is compared to her yeeaaars of political experience.

How low. Really. But watching her and other politicians mudslinging… is funny, entertaining and worth a bag of popcorn. Showbiz celebrities try their best to be tactful, but not the leaders of our country. Just saying.

Loren on Mar and Jamby on Manny. Yikeee. Love team!

Ricky Martin: Proud Homosexual

"I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am." - Ricky Martin

Ricky Martin, the famous Puerto Rican pop singer, has finally admitted his homosexuality. And yes, many people say, FINALLY!

We all loved (and love) Ricky Martin. Who didn’t live the “Livin’ La Vida Loca”? Who didn’t “Shake Your Bon-Bon” and danced to “She Bangs”? Ricky Martin was a craze. Everybody learned to dance to his groove. Girls certainly went gaga over him – but they’re not alone. Gays melted from his killer abs and fell in love with his voice, of course.

With a huge gay following, he was constantly being asked if he was gay. In 2000, he said, "I guess these rumours were started by people who don't have a life, or perhaps it's because they want me to be like them and I'm not. I try not to pay attention to any of these allegations. I could have been married with kids for years or have 27 girlfriends, and if people still want to go around saying that I'm gay, they will.1

Perhaps many are wondering, Why didn’t he say so before? Ricky Martin said that it’s because his loved ones advised him not to – in different ways, with different reasons. I guess many people thought of his career and how the big news could ruin everything for Martin. But now, Ricky says, “Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen 5 or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment.2

It’s not about his gleaming career now. It’s about him and his self. It’s about his inner peace. Writing a memoir has most likely affected his decision to come out now. He had time to think his life over – his past – and now it’s time to face that one important part of himself that he needs to say.

“The word "happiness" takes on a new meaning for me as of today.3

Well said, Ricky Martin, well said. You did it for yourself but God knows how many people out there became deeply inspired.

Who's Watched and Waiting for GLEE?

Who watched Fox's Glee? Who had difficulty getting over Glee songs playing in your head over and over 'til you got the next dose in the next episode? God, I swear I couldn't take my head off 'Bust Your Windows'. It's the main reason I got hooked.

Aside from the Glee songs that are so engaging, the cast also did an excellent job on the show. There's a thin line between realistic and theatrical but it really worked. The characters and their roles are quite stereotypical but they made it look like it's non-cliche.

Just a few notes:

Rachel Berry (Lea Michele): I have to say she's annoying. Haha! There's just something about her mouth... and I know it's about her being dramatic that does it. She's misunderstood, at the bottom of the highschool food chain, but she dreams to be a star. She's so willful, it's viral. And she got a good singing voice, too.

Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith): sucks at dancing. He looks awkward. Maybe he's quite tall? ("freakishly tall") But, he's got that good-boy looks that fits the character. His difference from Puck made the love triangle interesting. [I forgot to add: I can't forget Finn's twitching toes as he sang 'I Can't Fight this Feeling' in the shower.]

Quinn Fabray's (Dianna Agron) pregnant tummy didn't get really big despite focus shots. And can someone explain why she was jumping on the mattresses while she's a few months pregnant? Other than that, admit it, she's really cute.

The rest of the cast like Artie, Tina, Mercedes, Kurt, Mr. Schu, Sue (oh, did we hate her?) , Emma and Ken are so adorable. Each has their own distinct personalities. Because of this, nobody - at least to me - really outshone the others despite bigger roles given to Rachel, Finn and Mr. Schuester. Each represents something different and each has his/her time to shine.

Will Emma and Mr. Schuester work? Will there be a chance for Rachel and Finn now that Finn's mad with Quinn and Puck? Will there be a second chance for Artie and Tina? Will there be love for Mercedes and Kurt? Glee Season 2 is coming this year - bigger and longer. Fox said it's going to add more episodes to it.

Stay tuned because GLEE's coming!!

Anne Curtis deserves more respect: Just like the Rest of US

Anne Curtis couldn't help but get emotional as her nip-slip gets posted all over multimedia channels AND in front of tabloids. Who wouldn't?

For those who didn't know (but I bet you all do), it happened during the first Boracay episode of ASAP XV. To make the long story short, Anne did a dance number with Sam Milby in her bikini top, did a lifting move, and there goes the bikini malfunction, exposing Anne's breasts to the madlang people in broad Boracay daylight and sunshine.

Of course, it's the hottest couple in town dancing on the stage so people naturally had their cameras on for videos and photos. Despite requests by the management for peope to delete all recorded evidence, they were still on the net in less than 12 hours. So disrespectful, madlang people.

Come Showtime, Anne's back to business but it was evident that she's feeling awkward about herself facing many people. It's understandable, she should have some kind of trauma and maybe a little bit of paranoia: Is there something wrong that would be posted again all over the internet? It's really sad, seeing her with dwindled confidence unlike how she used to be.

People say, celebrities should be used to intrigues and all mayhem like exposed private moments (underwear and body parts included). I wonder if it means giving up being human for the celebrity status. I wonder if that includes giving the public the power to disrespect you in every way they can.

Moreover, people started murmuirng among themselves that the nip-slip is all part of a publicity stunt for Anne and Sam's upcoming movie, Babe, I Love You. I could imagine how infuriating that sounded for Anne. Is she some kind of a deranged flop slut who would disgrace herself to beg people to watch the movie? I don't think so. With Anne and Sam's success - individually and together - they do not need nip slips; not someone who won Best Actress, not someone who got 174,875 on Twitter and many more fans out there.

Now, all celebrity - victims could do is wish that people would find another celebrity to pick on and forget about their story. That's really sad.

Cesar Montano & Toni Rose Gayda: Their Children Are Gone

Pinakamasakit sa isang magulang ang mamatayan ng anak. Anak, na isinilang sa mundo, na inalagaan at minahal ng labis, anak na ayaw mo man lang madapuan ng lamok.

Toni Rose Gayda and Cesar Montano mourn for their respective children in their unexpected deaths.

Edward James Lim, Toni Rose's son, died in an accident last Friday, March 19, when he fell from their 4th floor condo balcony in Wack-Wack Mandaluyong City. He was immediately rushed to the Cardinal Santos Memorial Hospital but died shortly of broken arms and ribs.

Speculations of suicide rose but his mother and his grandmother, Rosal Rosal, denied it and requested the public to stop such suspicions. They only want respect for the loved son.

Meanwhile, Christian Angelo Manhilot, Cesar Montano's son, died this morning in his father's house in Quezon City. He died of a .45 gunshot on the head. He was brought to the General Malvar Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz were in Bohol that time as Cesar prepares for his candidacy as governor of Bohol. They hurriedly went back to Manila after receiving the bad news.

Cesar believes that Angelo committed suicide and asked investigations to be stopped. He also do not want an autopsy on his son's body. The family house helpers said that the suicide might be because of a love problem with Angelo's girlfriend.

Whatever the reason is, death is a loss that cannot be altered. Let us all respect the deaths of souls loved and pray for the families to have their hearts healed from grief.

Earth Hour: Let Your World Stop

It is only for an hour, but it saves a lot.

Earth Hour 2010 happens on March 27, Saturday at 8:29PM. All major cities and towns in the country are to switch off lights for an hour. This is in response to the Earth Hour movement that provides climate change, global warming and environmental awareness.

It's a call to action, a global invite for everyone to start thinking for our planet's sake. Ah... let me rephrase that - it's for the sake of our children's future (unless you want them to walk to school with oxygen tanks behind them).

Earth Hour is not just awareness. Earth Hour actually saves around P3 million for the country. It's not affecting the future, but the present as well.

Let Your World Stop: 60 minutes

Get your eyes off led screens for a while. The world will not die if you don't tweet or update your Facebook status. Take the time to get out of your house and breathe. Look up to the moon, stars or clouds and ask yourself, when was the last time?

Take the time to sit down and use your mouth for talking, not your fingers. Chat with family or friends. Catch up and you'd be surprised to learn new things from the people closest to you.

Get to know silence. And peace.

Support Earth Hour by turning off electricity in your houses and offices.

Derek Ramsay: "I will not deny it"

Controversies and intrigues never seem to stop hounding one of the hottest showbiz couples today: Derek Ramsay and Angelica Panganiban. Issue after issue of break-ups and verbal abuses, the newest intrigue on the couple: a controversial beach photo with Angelica's hand in her boyfriend Derek's board shorts -- right in the cover of a tabloid.

As The Buzz tried to get insights from different points of view: some say it's fake, photo experts say it's real. Derek says, "I will not deny it." According to the leading man of this story, the photo was shot at Boracay some two or three years ago. And he doesn't think that any of their friends leaked the photo to be shown in public.

They are a fun-loving couple. Maloko, makulit.... it's even evident in the photo that they are just playing around and not in an intimate moment.

What is the big deal? Boy Abunda, Kris Aquino and some other reporters and showbiz writers think the only big deal about this is that the couple on the hotseat are, well, hot. Many people would take off their underwear or walk nude in public just to get their hands on Derek and Angelica. Who wouldn't? These two have faces and bodies are sculpted in Olympus.

Hotness aside, the couple is also very talented. Angelica Panganiban is currently doing some shows namely the Primetime Bida teleserye, Rubi, and is also doing Banana Split where she's getting famous for being Krissy. She's also a lead in the 2009 MMFF movie, I Love You Goodbye with Derek and Gabby Concepcion.
Meanwhile, Derek's name is also soaring in show business. He's been lead in 2 major movies recently in I Love You Goodbye and And I Love You So with Bea Alonzo. He's been with Judy Ann Santos in Ysabella and he's back with her inn their current teleserye, "Habang May Buhay".

No, there's no "big deal" in a girlfriend's hand [just halfway] through her boyfriend's shorts. It's not even a big deal if there's a kissing moment or anything intimate. They are lovers. They have been together for years. They are a happy couple who are in love.

The publisher of the tabloid who brought the picture out on the cover said that he's got more photos - 20 in his estimate. He said that the first picture is only a part of a "series" of photos. So parang teleserye lang, abangan niyo ang susunod na kabanata!

And Derek Ramsay remains unfazed. He and Angelica knew what they did thay day and if they got more photos, Derek could only say, "Suwerte sila!"

Charice: The "newly crowned Pop Princess"

The New York Post dubbed Charice Pempengco as the "newly crowned pop princess" in its post Pop Wrap's fave five 3.17.

We knew the Charice who can belt the highest of notes despite her age. We knew the young girl who can sing Whitney Houston and Celine Dion songs and still have that smile on her face. We watched her flare with excellence and confidence in the Ellen DeGeneres show and in Oprah. In short, we watched her rise to fame as she soared on high notes.

But Charice isn't simply that kind of singer who gets stuck in a musical genre and disappear over time. She proves she has more up his sleeve and it's not only the high notes that she can perform. She started performing Michael Jackson songs like Billie Jean. You can see her in her videos taking it easy with RnB and pop songs.

And now, with her newest single, Pyramid, she shows she can do much more! She's not only this rising young diva, she's also this cool teenage girl who takes it easy and can do the groove. She's not only the lady who's good to listen to, but cool to sing with as well.

Here's the music video of "Pyramid"

Filipinos couldn't be more proud with her international achievements. However, many do not like the title, "Pop Princess" as it is in conflict with our local "Pop Princess" Sarah Geronimo. I DON'T THINK there should be a point of argument. First, the New York Post couldn't have known (and probably doesn't care) about our local titles. They just feel that Charice should be a pop princess and there it goes. And second, we all know the differences between Charice and Sarah. We should just be all proud of the two.

Tom Cruise: Big Name, Small Beginning

Tom Cruise didn't come out of his mother's womb as THE "Tom Cruise" and walked the red carpet. He was just an ordinary guy, like the rest of us, before he reached stardom.

Before getting his big break, the then 12-year-old Tom Cruise spent a short time in Kentucky where he was a paperboy for the Louisville Courier-Journal. In fact, it was Tom's newspaper-delivery earnings that put food on the table, after Tom, his mom and his sister lived in near-poverty for a couple of years. Oh, and when he was younger, he joined a seminary in order to become a priest. Until Scientology came along, that is. Or puberty.

It's really inspiring how people like Cruise, who was just a paperboy, got to where he is now. The man we are reading in the papers now, once delivered the those papers at doorsteps. The rest of us got hope!

Should Arnel Pineda be Punished?

March 14, 2010 - The whole country once again stopped their world to watch Manny Pacquiao fight against Joshua Clottey. But before the fight, a much-awaited part is also the singing of the national anthem, Lupang Hinirang (that's 'bayang magiliw' for those who didn't know).

For Manny's latest fight, it was Arnel Pineda who graced the stadium with his rendition of Lupang Hinirang.

The thing is, there is NO room for RENDITIONS when it comes to the national anthem. The Philippine Constitution clearly states that the national anthem should be sang as it was originally composed by Julian Felipe -- with a marching tempo. This is what the National Historical Institute (NHI) always stresses. The right tempo should be followed -- No excuses!

OPINION:

Artists are always saying their favorite piece in this issue about "artistic freedom". Arnel Pineda said it wouldn't make him less of a Filipino if he changed the rendition.

But I really think: Artists are more concerned about showing their singing prowess rather than being proud to be a Filipino and singing the song properly. I bet they are hoping to be discovered somehow by a prestigious Hollywood recording company.

I mean, come on! Why do they keep on insisting those high notes?

The marching tempo of the national anthem should express soldiers going to war... Filipinos getting ready for a battle--firm, steadfast and proud. It's all about the Philippines and the Filipino valor

... NOT about the singer and his/her "artistic freedom."

note: I've seen comments about different artists making their renditions of USA's Star Spangled Banner. Who cares about their national anthem? The topic is about OUR anthem. Should we always follow what American's do?

Sam Milby and Anne Curtis: Babe, I Love You

From friends, to lovers, to enemies and now, Sam Milby and Anne Curtis are back together to rekindle their relationship with their upcoming movie this summer, Babe I Love You. It's going to be their first movie together after 3 teleserye team-ups.

In this movie, Sam Milby plays the role of a professor which is a first for him. Among his firsts in this movie is a fight scene as his character also portrays a taekwondo black-belter. On the other hand, Anne plays the role of a promo girl. How a multi-talented professor meets and falls in love with a promo girl, that's what's in store for us in their upcoming movie this April.

Getting Back Together

To get back together again in love or not -- that is the question. Does getting together in a romantic movie ups the chances of getting back together again in real life?

Anne Curtis and Sam Milby are not closing their doors to anything. Although their real life love story ended in much tears and hurt (followed by what they call a 'silent war'), they are now gradually moving on and starting their friendship again.

'Living day by day'-- that is their response to constant questions. What's important is that they are now in good terms. Whether they're going to fall in love again, we all just have to stay tuned.

On their Career Success

Undoubtedly, Sam and Anne are one of the biggest names in Philippine Showbiz today. Anne Curtis is not only one of the hottest female celebrities but she has also proven her acting prowess especially when she bagged the Best Actress award for her MMFF movie, 'Baler'. It doesn't stop there as she continues to excel in her shows. Anne is now one of the hosts in ABS-CBN's 'Showtime'.

Meanwhile, Sam Milby continues to excel and improve his talents. From being a Pinoy Big Brother housemate who barely knew how to speak Tagalog properly, he is now one of the multi-talented and sought-after ABS-CBN talents. With several movies, TV shows and music albums under his belt, he couldn't be underestimated.

With these two amazing stars leading this Star Cinema movie, Babe, I Love You directed by Mae Czarina Cruz, we can only expect something exciting, engaging and hopefully, excellent.
